05:15 pm - New tank, fairly new to this, had a marine aquarium several years back, getting back into it.
Just purchased a new 75 Gal Top Fin Aquarium and aquarium stand. I want to "blog" about my progress, so I figured this would be a good way. I plan on having inverts, live rock, and fish in my tank, especially damsels and clowns. I will add some snails, gobies, and shrimp to keep the sand in good condition. I am buying everything in stages. I have ordered my RO/DI water filtration system and expect in it arrive in a few days. In a few weeks I will order my canister filter (Penn Plax Cascade 1500 - 350gph), my live sand, my salt mixture, and a simple hydrometer for now, so I can start getting the water in the tank conditioned and cycled.

Once I have the stand put together and have the aquarium on it, I will take pictures and post. I will post pics along the way as well. I hope to get advice as I go along so please feel free to comment and make suggestions.

These little crustaceans swarming in my reef tank and refugium. They are tiny - 1/16 of an inch max. Anybody knows what is their name, family or an order?

08:50 am - New!
I'm very excited about my new tank and this community!

1. What size tank do you have?
14 gallon

2. What lighting do you use?

3. How many pounds of LR do you have?
LR as in live rock? Then 2.5 lb.

4. How long have you had your tank?
I've had the tank for two months, and I've finally set it up! I've had fish for just over a week.

5. Any fish?
Yup! Two ocellaris clownfish named Minty and Fanty. Minty was the first one in (picture of him below). He went a little crazy from loneliness, so I finally broke down and risked the changing levels of a still-cycling tank and I got him a friend. Both are doing very well now.

6. Any corals? If so... stony, soft, or SPS?
Nothing yet, and probably not for a while.

7. Any other animals (anemones, crabs, shrimp, etc.)?
Not yet.

8. Any future plans?
I have evil plans for a snail named Mr. Universe and an as-yet-unnamed starfish. Any suggestions?

9. Any pictures?!
These pictures are a trifle old, before I made a few, purely aesthetic, changes.
Most definitely!Collapse )

04:56 pm - Power head issue
Hi again. So, I have a koralia 4 that I use in my 90 gal and I went to move it to change the current and I broke it at the base. The coraline had grown around the ball socket and I didn't realize it till it was too late. A friend of mine told me that if I were to write to the company that made them they could supply me with a new part or a new one all together. The problem is I can't find the company. I tried to google it, but I come up with some resort place and a company that does belts. I find distributors, but I wanted the website and was wondering if any of you knew what it might be. Thank you for your time.

Also, I don't have the receipt anymore so I can't take it back to the LF where I bought it from.

11:57 am - Power heads
Hi, I'm new to this community. I've been in the saltwater hobby for about two years now. Have a 90 gal saltwater tank. I'm thinking about branching out and starting a frag tank. So, the reason for this post is to get your feedback.

I have a 20 gal long that I'm going to be using as my frag tank and was curious about what kind of flow I should have. I'll be doing softies primarily in this tank until I get more experience and money to start some more tanks. Hehehe.

Look forward to hearing back from all of you. And when I have time, I'll take pics of my 90 gal to share with you.

12:35 pm - New here!
Hiya just saw this community and I just had to join! I'll give details and pics of my current tank, plus my new tank that I'm setting up in december! (Once I get the tank delievered haha)
I'm from Ireland haha so we do things a little differently over here!

1. What size tank do you have?
It's a 22gallon nano

2. What lighting do you use?
1x24 watt double T5 tube - tube has one white, one blue, it's useless for anything but the easiest softies

3. How many pounds of LR do you have?
22lbs or 10kg

4. How long have you had your tank?
Running for a year

5. Any fish?
Currently only have two clownfish in the tank - had a wonderful scarlet damsel who just got too big and I've gone through the usual collection of fish - chromis (too boring), royal dottyback, blennies, gobies, damsels. As I am getting a new larger tank I'm not putting any more fish in, no point

6. Any corals? If so... stony, soft, or SPS?
Yep, zoanthids, mushrooms and Xenia

7. Any other animals (anemones, crabs, shrimp, etc.)?
2x Cleaner shimp
3x Trochus snails
3x red legged hermits
1x Sand sifting starfish

8. Any future plans?
Possibly seahorse tank, but otherwise it'll be sold when the new tank comes

9. Any pictures?! (ill put more up at a later date - never mind the cyano haha its gone now)

And now for my new tank that will be set up december hopefully!

1. What size tank do you have?
70gallon with 20gallon sump

2. What lighting do you use?
1x 150w metal halide, 2x actinic blue T5, moonlight LEDs (Hopefully!)

3. How many pounds of LR do you have?
I'll be putting 30kg - 65ibs into it

4. How long have you had your tank?
Doesn't exist yet! :D

5. Any fish?
The plan for this tank is:
2x clownfish - the two I currently have
1x yellow tang
1x achllies tang or purple tang
1x fairy wrasse
4x anthias - have not decided on type yet, I do like Evans though
3x firefish
1x midas blenny
1x blue cheek sand sifting goby

6. Any corals? If so... stony, soft, or SPS?
I'll be doing all types, SPS, LPS, softies, everything

7. Any other animals (anemones, crabs, shrimp, etc.)?
It will have:
4x cleaner shrimp
10x snails
20x red legged hermits (only hermits that havn't gone for my corals yet!)
2x peppermint shrimp
2x sand sifting starfish
5x sand sifting snails

8. Any future plans?
To do my first SPS and LPS reef!

10:27 am - White Cloudy Water?
So, looking for some suggestions here.

My old tank sprung a leak. I didn't have a spare tank to move everything into while I stripped all the silicone and resealed the tank, so I bought a new tank.

I moved everything over last Sunday.

At time of move, Ammonia, Nitrite, and Nitrate were all 0. SG at 1.025 (a bit high, I admit)
Obviously, when I moved the sand and rock over, everything was VERY cloudy.
By yesterday, everything had settled out, and I had a clear tank.

When I got up this morning, it was cloudy again. It's a thin white cloudy color.

I didn't get a chance to check the ammonia, nitrite, or nitrate on my way out the door, and will check it as soon as I can, but I have a hard time with a massive spike of those considering I was at 0 before hand.

I'll also do a water change tonight, because that can't hurt.

I've got 2 clowns, 1 firefish goby, and 1 royal gramma in a 65g tank. Approx 50lbs of live rock and 4" of live sand at the bottom. Again, water, sand, rock, and fish all came out of my existing, established tank (5+ years)

So, anyone got any ideas? I've been googling around, and nothing seems to fit.
